Buy these before you buy the rope. Every knot you tie is a knot you might need to get out of faster than your fingers can manage, and the moment you need that to happen is not the moment to find out you own regular scissors.
These are EMT-style shears, the same design paramedics use to cut clothing off an injured person, and the whole thing turns on the rounded, protected tip. It slides flat between the rope and the body so the blade never faces skin. An angled handle keeps your hand clear of whatever you are cutting, and the stainless steel goes through rope, tape, poly wrap, and zip ties without sawing.
At 6.5 by 2.5 inches they fit in a nightstand drawer, a toy bag, or a jacket pocket. Wipe them down with soap and water and keep them somewhere you can reach without standing up.
Educator's Note: Shears are not an accessory to rope play, they are the condition for doing it at all. Keep them within arm's reach of wherever the tie is happening, not across the room, and make sure both people know where they live before anything gets tied. To use them, slide the blunt tip flat along the skin and under the rope, angle the blade away from the body, and cut. Do not try to work the tip into a tight wrap, loosen the wrap first if you can. These will also cut tape and clothing, which matters if a scene involves either. Worth doing once: practice cutting a scrap of the rope you actually own, so the first time is not during an emergency. Replace them if the pivot loosens or the blades stop closing cleanly.
