The Wartenberg wheel started out in a neurologist's office as a tool for testing nerve response, which is exactly why it works so well for sensation play. It was designed from the beginning to make nerves report back.

A 1.3 inch wheel of blunt pins turns on a 7.2 inch handle, and pressure is the only control you need. Rest it on the skin and it produces goosebumps and a light electrical tickle. Lean into it and it bites. The pins are deliberately blunt, because the goal is a pricking sensation rather than anything that breaks skin.

Both finishes use a stainless steel wheel and nickel-free metal throughout, which matters if you react to jewelry. The Silver is the classic polished instrument on a zinc alloy handle, and the lowest-priced way into sensation play. The Gold runs an aluminum handle with a gold finish for something less clinical-looking. Both hold temperature, so running the wheel under cold water or warming it in your hands adds a second variable before you have touched anyone. Clean with soap and water, a toy cleaner, or by boiling.

Educator's Note: Test it on your own inner forearm first, at several pressures, so what you deliver is something you have felt rather than something you are guessing at. Roll the wheel rather than dragging or scraping it, and treat scraping as a separate and sharper thing that gets its own conversation. Safe ground is the back, the arms, the chest, the stomach, and the thighs. Stay away from the eyes and face entirely, avoid the genitals directly, and take extra care on the inner thighs where skin is thin and glands sit close to the surface. Skip broken skin, fresh shaves, moles, and anywhere irritated. If your partner is blindfolded, say something before you make contact, since an unexpected sharp sensation lands much harder without sight. Clean it between partners, every time.
